New-Original

Bladerunner

Bladerunner

(homage to Pablo Picasso)

Oil on Canvas

20 x 24 inches

Inner frame is made of Camphor wood,

while the outer frame is chestnut

This painting by Vladimir Kush is a paraphrase of the well-known work by Pablo Picasso entitled "Girl on the Ball," painted in his blue period.  There is an athlete and a girl balancing on a ball on the foreground of the painting.  The athlete, in Picasso's painting, symbolizes motionlessness and stability, while the girl is a symbol of life and flexibility. The painting by Picasso is built on contrasts.  The bluish-pink light in the background signifies a specific period of Picasso's creative life.  In essence, Pablo Picasso was sure that any physical body could be represented with planes and facets.  This assurance was proven by the fact that the painting is a 2 dimensional plane, and everything else is an illusion.  The outline of the horse in a pasture and the figure of the woman bystander with the child are lacking any volume and are slipping off the painting.

Kush brings back the 3 dimensional reality of color and shape and their significance in the painting.  He establishes that the contradiction between such opposites like hard-stone and flexible-life goes much further then the postmodernist trick.  The artist introduces a dramatic element.  The girl balancing on the edge of a blade is, in essence, a person balancing on the edge of the abyss, turning the dangerous stunt into a game.  The powerful athlete in the foreground has turned into a monument with vines growing over him.  The sun revives the landscape while its rays shine as sharp blades. The flower leaning over the blade is an important symbol of life glorification.

Metaphoricallyspeaking

It was in 1997 that Vladimir Kush painted his piece entitled "Wind" from which many other paintings have evolved.  This is where the artist found his voice as a "Metaphorical Realist" painter and he resolved to follow it:  metaphorical principle in content; clear, deep coloring; attention to detail; perfect technique.

WindWind

Our lives can move along as gently and calmly as an afternoon sea breeze.  Frantic storm clouds can build and propel us into turbulent times.  The billowing shirt gives the invisible force of the wind a physical presence, connecting us to that force with a personal possession, an ordinary denim shirt.  The shirt connects us to our origins represented by the ornate building, perhaps our family home.  The people we know, and who join us on our journey, are shown gathered on the grounds surrounding our house.  The overall blue tone of the painting binds us to our blue planet earth, which in turn connects us to the greater universe as we travel to our destiny.

In Greek mythology there is a cave where the winds live, kept in a sack.  The crew of Ulysses opened this sack and the howling winds escaped and could not be put back.  Our lives are like that sack of winds, once we begin our journey we can never go back, we cannot return.  This is the essence of man and the bittersweet joy of our life.  Engage life and be honorable on your voyage, be courageous.  Be true to your own vision as you ride the wind to your destiny.
