Amor de Marinero
OIL ON CANVAS. ORIGINAL SIZE 11x17 in

  • The rose is a symbol of love, beauty, and spring – all that art associates with femininity.
  • In Greek mythology, a rose was blooming when Aphrodite, the goddess of love, emerged from the sea foam. This became the subject of Sandro Botticelli's paintings Allegory of Spring and Birth of Venus.

With its bowsprit thrusting forward, the ship in the painting represents resolve and determination, and is a symbol of masculinity. The curtain swaying with the wind, caressing and supporting the rose, her gazing through the open window, all speak of the emotional connection between the rose and her beloved.

The theme of the painting echoes an older work, Rose Awaiting.
