Sunset Stillness
OIL ON CANVAS. ORIGINAL SIZE 10x14 in

  • Sunset is when the light of day fades into darkness and sleep.
  • The cycle of sunset and sunrise repeats for millions of years. Every living thing comes to a standstill in order to continue to fight for a place in the sun when the next day dawns.
  • It was, however, only with the arrival of man that delight in creation – the aesthetic appreciation of beauty – was born.

The painting metaphorically represents the stillness of sunset when the birds cease to sing, the waters of the river seem to stop flowing, and the sun hangs in the air like a ripe fruit before slipping beneath the sheets of the horizon.

At this time of day, thousands of people get out into the open to enjoy the twilight extravaganza that is similar each night but never exactly the same. They watch the sun setting in the hope of welcoming it time and again.
